Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical procedure where small, inconspicuous incisions are made, and then a thin, hollow, tube called a cannula, connected to a surgical vacuum, is introduced to dislodge and suction out localized fat deposits. Localized fat deposits are areas of deep fat beneath your skin that are resistant to diet and exercise. The removal of these localized fat deposits will result in slimming and improvement in your body’s contour and proportion. Liposuction can be used to treat the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, buttocks, back, upper arms, neck, chin, inner knee, chest, and cheeks. It can be a stand alone procedure used for body contouring as well as in conjunction with otherprocedures like a Tummy Tuck for additional body contouring.

Am I A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are otherwise healthy adults, who are nonsmokers, who feel that their excess fat deposits on their bodies, regardless of location, do not respond to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates for liposuction also have firm, elastic skin, good muscle tone, and are within 30% of their ideal body weight. Dr. Capuano can help determine if liposuction is right for you, after careful examination of your anatomy and skin quality, and consideration of your individual goals. Liposuction surgery can be optimized through combined treatment with surgical or non-surgical skin tightening and rejuvenation therapies including skin care systems, and laser therapy, improving the health and texture of your skin.

Length of Surgery
Liposuction procedures are based on areas, every area is a bit different in terms of the length it will take but on average with multiple areas being done it takes 2-3 hours. If you are having one "area" liposuctioned it can take as little as 15-45 minutes in the Operating Room for traditional liposuction.
Expected Recovery
Liposuction is relatively easy to recover from, there are few sutures (stitches) that are required, limiting the soreness from surgical sites and there is no muscle rearrangement, so discomfort lasts usually no more than five days. Most patients are able to return to work within about 1 to 2 weeks. You may begin light exercise at 2-3 weeks, while 6 weeks is required, before returning to strenuous activity or lifting. Bruising may be present for up to 3-4 weeks. Patients are instructed to wear a compressive garment over the suctioned areas for 4 to 6 weeks. Although some results are immediately evident, the final result of your liposuction may not be apparent until 6 months post operatively as swelling can interfere with final results. Aggressive liposuction can take longer to recover from, this would be discussed at your consultation with Dr. Capuano.
Common Side Effects
Bruising, swelling, soreness, temporary numbness, fluid drainage from incision sites. Areas sometimes seem hard and generally resolve over time. Lymphatic massages are usually prescribed by Dr. Capuano and are performed in our office by our lymphatic masseuse who specializes in post surgical massages and under Dr. Capuano's guidance.

Risks include bleeding, infection, hematoma, seroma, changes in skin sensation, scarring, asymmetry, rippling of skin, loose skin, prolonged swelling.
