Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery or eyelid lift, blepharoplasty, also known as a “bleph” can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids.

The upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a procedure to

  • Remove excess, hanging skin covering the natural upper eyelid folds,

  • Eliminate upper eyelid puffiness.

  • Look more rested and vibrant by

  • Reduce the appearance of tired, sagging skin.

Our NJ Eyelid Surgery is performed by removing the excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid through an incision that is hidden in your natural skin crease.

The lower eyelid blepharoplasty addresses

  • Puffiness,

  • Deep groves

  • Bags under your lower eyelids.

This eyelid surgery NJ is performed by removal or rearrangement of fat, and elevation of soft tissues through an incision hidden just under the eyelashes.  Tightening of the lower eyelid may also be required, which is achieved through another NJ eyelid surgery procedure called a canthopexy that is sometimes performed with a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The best eyelid surgery candidates for blepharoplasty are otherwise healthy adults, who are nonsmokers, who have fullness or excess skin obscuring the natural fold of their upper eyelids, or who have the appearance of puffiness, deep groves or bags in their lower eyelids.  Your surgeon can help determine if eyelid surgery NJ is right for you, after careful examination of your eyelid anatomy and skin quality, and consideration of your individual eyelid goals.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is ideal for the correction of:

  • Puffy upper eyelids that give a swolen appearance
  • Bags beneth the eyes
  • Loose or sagging skin on your eyelids that may cause limited vision
  • Lower eyelids that sag which display the whites of the eyes below the iris
  • Treating and reducing wrinkles
  • Puffy lower eyelids that give a swolen appearance

Eyelid surgery is optimized by also improving the health, color and texture of your eyelid and facial skin through combined treatment with non-surgical facial rejuvenation therapies including skin care systems, injectable fillers, toxin therapy, and laser resurfacing.

What is it called when your eyes are misaligned?

Uneven height of eyes is called vertical orbital dystopia.  Orbital Dystopia usually occurs following trauma to the face resulting from fractures to the bones around the orbit which can change the volume or shape of the orbit allowing the eyeball to sink into the face or become more inferiorly displaced.  Typically this is corrected if you are symptomatic and are experiencing double vision.

Please contact board certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Aaron Capuano for a consultation in our NJ office to learn more about eyelid surgery.

Will I have bruising after eyelid surgery?

Most people have bruising post upper eyelid Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. This can last even up to a month.  NJ plastic surgeon, Dr. Capuano helps speed along the bruising process by lasering the brusies if they seem to be troubling the patient.  It is also very important to refrain from drinking alcohol at least one week prior to surgery and not ingest anything that begins with the letter "G", garlic, ginseng, ginko biloba. Anything else that causes thinning of the blood like Aspirin should not be taken as well.  If you have any condition that you need to take thinners for it should be discussed with Dr. Capuano and your Primary Care physician whether or not it is safe for you to refrain from taking certain medications.

Should I change my makeup post blepharoplasty?

Yes, Dr. Capuano and staff recommend that our eyelid surgery patients replace their eyeshadow and mascara and any product that is used in your eye area that comes out of a vessel other then by being pumped.  We also recommend that you get new brushes, though if your eyelid brushes are costly, it is recommended to thoroughly wash them in hot water and Z.O's foamacleanse several times before re-using them on your eyelids.  This is to minimize the risk of introducing bacteria which can cause an infection and greatly reduce the cosmesis of the surgery.

What is the best treatment to address my lower eyelids?

The best approach for your lower eyelids depends on whether or not you’re interested in having surgery performed. Based on your photographs you look like an ideal candidate for a lower lid transconjunctival blepharoplasty with laser skin tightening and fat grafting to the tear trough and malar regions.  This removes or repositions the fat bulge in the lower lids above the orbital rim and replaces the fat at the eyelid-cheek junction.  Results from this surgery are expected to be long lasting, and correct the aging changes.  If you are not interested in surgery, the lower eyelid region can be  camouflaged with a combination of deep filler in the medial cheek, just above the bone and more superficial filler with low affinity for water, just under the skin in the tear trough area using a blunt cannula.  Filler along with laser tightening can improve this area, but results are more temporary.

Is there an eyelid surgery which lifts droopy lower eyelids to eliminate scleral show below the irises? (I've included photos)

Thank you for your question. The pictures reveal that you have scleral show and the answer to your question is yes, there are several procedures available that will address your concerns. The most appropriate procedure can be determined by a thorough, in person clinical evaluation, looking specifically at the degree of laxity that exists in the lower eyelids and their relationship to the globe and orbital rims.  If your sclera show can be improved with either canthopexy or canthoplasty, then they would be my first choice. One word of caution if your function is good and you are just looking for cosmetic improvements in your lower eyelid appearance is that a tarsal strip procedure can result in narrowing of the distance between your medial and lateral canthus which can make your eyes look beady. Although it can tighten the lower lids the most, it may look worse than when you started.  I hope this helps.
