Body Contouring

Body Contouring

Body Contouring is the term commonly used to describe the process of removing unwanted fat from seemingly stubborn areas of the body all in an aeffort to improve one's shape or contour.  Liposuction is the primary go to surgery when one is considering body countouring.  Liposuction can be used on many areas of the body, aggressive liposuctioning, as a side effect, can tighten loose skin which also aids in the look of body contouring.  Some areas of the body may require more than liposuctioning, a tummy tuck or back lift may be required to fulfill the patient's ultimate goal. Areas that are commonly liposuctioned are the neck, the breast on men (please see gynecomastia) inner things, outer thighs, lower back and upper back, arms, flanks, stomach area, also areas referred to as love handles and side boob. People commonly feel they need a brazilian butt lift in order to achieve more projection in their buttocks area, many times this can be achieved by using liposuction in other areas around the buttocks to achieve the desired look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the body contouring procedure take to perform?

Body contouring can vary according to the patients need.  For liposuction of the back, it usually takes 1.5-2.5 hours based on need.  As far as liposuction of the sides, that is commonly performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck and can take roughly an hour for both "love handles" to be lipoed.  Regarding other areas of the body, inner thighs take anywhere from 2-3 hours, outer thighs take roughly 1.5 hours. Arms sculpting takes 1.5-2.5 hours. Liposuction of the abdomen, which is usually performed prior to a tummy tuck if the need should arise can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.

What is the recovery for body contouring?

The recovery for body contouring can vary greatly.  Let's start with full body contouring,  the recovery time for that would be longer, say one week.  Being that several areas of the body are being liposuctioned on the same day, it is a little bit longer of a recovery process.  There is swelling and bruising that is likely, the swelling can last for up to six weeks depending upon your post operative lifestyle.  Bruising can last several weeks as well, but by far and large you will feel better every day.

What is the best time of year to have body contouring performed?

The best time of year to have body contouring performed would depend on whether or not your body contouring includes a tummy tuck or not.   If your body contouring procedure is solely liposuction the preparedness is much less then that of a tummy tuck.  When considering the ideal timing for a procedure you should always take into account the amount of time Dr. Capuano recommends for your particular procedure.  Liposuction of the back for example can take 3-5 days to recover from but you may be bruised for several weeks following the procedure and there is likely swelling that will occur as a result of your procedure as your body could take that time to fully recvoer.  The most important thing is that you are happy.  If you share your life circumstances with Dr. Capuano and his staff, they will guide you through the process based on your lifestyle.  Always keep in mind this is about you and for you, because you are worth it.  Dr. Capuano and the Northern Center for Plastic Surgery are patient centric, they will help you fill in the blanks and see you through the intracacies of plastic surgery and make sure it is as seemless as possible because an imformed patient is a happy patient.

Will I bruise from the body contouring procedure?

Bruising is a common side effect of having any surgery.  We expect bruising with most surgeries.  There are times when people don't bruise from surgeries that we are more surprised, it is not concerning just surprising because it is a common side effect of having surgery.  So the answer is yes, expect to bruise, if you do not, enjoy!
