Bellafill

Bellafill

Bellafill is a long lasting dermal filler that is used to treat the nasolabial folds and acne scars.  There are other off label areas of the face and body that Bellafill can be used in as well.  For example, the hands, earlobes, chin, jawline and cheeks and temporal region. The Bellafill filler consists of PMMA which is intermixed with Bovine Collagen after it is injected, your body digests the Bovine collagen and replaces with your own around the PMMA (promotes collagen growth).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Bellafill last?

Bellafill stimulates long term collagen growth producing results that are purported to last 5 years, however, the studies that were performed for FDA approval, lasted only 5 years, so the company can only claim a 5 year longevity.  Bellafill consists of a base of tiny microspheres of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) which are suspended evenly within a bovine collagen gel.  Over time, your body digests the bovine collagen and uses the PMMA microspheres to create a scaffold into which it incorporates your own collagen.  PMMA has been used for years as an orthopedic implant, and lasts forever, so one can extrapolate that the effect of Bellafill may last much longer than the 5 years it was approved for.

Bellafill ages with you, it will move with your tissue as you age, reducing the chances that it will look unnatural over time. For these reasons, Bellafill is treated as a permenent filler in our office.

Is Bellafill an adequate filler for a chin augmentation?

Yes, Bellafill is a wonderful filler for a minor chin augmentation.  Because Bellafill lasts so long the patient can enjoy not having to be reinjected as often as with other fillers.

Why do I have to have a skin test performed before I have Bellafill injected?

Bellafill consists of PMMA spheres which are evenly dispersed in bovine (cow) collagen to create a lattice (or framework) on which to build your own collagen.  After the Bellafill is injected, your body digests the Bovine Collagen and replaces it with your own around the spheres.  The skin test is important to make sure that you don't have an allergy to the bovine collagen in Bellafill. The skin test consists of the bovine collagen without the PMMA, and a small amount is injected into the forearm. Following the skin test, the patient observes their forearm for reaction and contacts our office if they have a reaction, which may include: swelling, redness, or firmness at the injection site.

How long after my skin test can I have Bellafill injected?

Thanl you for the question.  The skin test associated with Bellafill will determine whether or not you will have an adverse reaction to the by product in Bellafill.  The recommendation for the skin test is approxiamtely 4 weeks from the date of injection.  The injection is in the forearm of the patient.

How and where on the body is the Bellafill skin test performed?

The Bellafill skin test is administered on the forearm of the individual.  It does not hurt, it takes less than a minute to administer to the patient and the rest of the test is simply observation of the area. If you see redness and/or swelling or pain or tingling after the injection, please contact our office for further instructions.
